An idiot’s guide to Formula One

The new car racing season began this weekend in Australia. It got off to a bad start, when some of the cars were swerving all over the road before they had even started the race proper. I think this might have been nerves on the part of the drivers, which is understandable I suppose.

The cars lined up according to how fast they had driven the previous day. To me, speed seems like an arbitrary measure to use. Maybe they should rank the cars according to other factors, such as inside décor or how good the car audio system is, but anyway, that’s how they do it. They waited at the traffic lights. I didn’t really understand why there were five red lights, but this is probably something they do in Australia.

The price of a greeting

Giving can give so much pleasure, but not in my experience when it comes to buying cards. They were a good idea once upon a time, until they became another brick in the wall of consumerism. I was staggered the other day at the price of a card and immediately put it down, walking out of the shop in protest. Here’s a satirical take on the greeting cards industry. The curse of spontaneous indecisiveness

It happened again. I was walking down the road, when a stranger approached from the opposite direction. Trying to predict which way they would step, I went left, but so did they, they went right and so did I. Before I could get my brain into gear, we had met. I had interrupted their progress and they had gotten in the way of mine. There were the usual muttered apologies, before we both went on our way, puzzling over our shared moment of spontaneous indecisiveness.

A tribute to Crufts

Let’s face it, winning a prize based on the obedience and perceived perfection of your dog is a bit of a silly concept, but it is one that seems to resonate. In the past, Crufts has gained viewing figures of over 14 million in the UK, but this year there is no coverage due to a dispute with the BBC over the participation of certain breeds. This is a big shame as we can only imagine the fun that is taking place from reports…
